Hey, there, DexFX Blog Readers! It's been a while since I've posted anything, but I thought I should share this with you all.... Paul and I have been working on a game for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad for quite a while, now, and we've gotten far enough along to release a trailer that shows some of the art, music (created by yours truly), and some of the game-play mechanics. I think the trailer also captures some of the humor of the game, as well as hinting at the larger story.

A small crowd assembled outside the Federal building in San Francisco which houses the courtroom of Judge Vaughn Walker, who just handed down a ruling striking down California's Prop 8. Prop 8, passed by a narrow margin of voters last year, took away the rights of same-sex couples to marry.

In the wake of the iPad announcement, I thought I'd post a little
picture from my phone, made using an app that allows me to create high-
dynamic-range images (HDRI). If you can use the iPhone to post-
produce photos like this, to paint, to compose music, to edit video,
just imagine what you'll be able to do on the tablet.

Flying Over the Holidays

Oh, how I dislike flying during the holidays.... And today it's not even for family holiday fun, but instead for work. Just down to San Diego and then back up to SF tonight.

Nicely, though, people have been really pleasant all morning. Maybe it's Christmas spirit, or maybe it's just that everyone has gotten used to the high-volume shipping business that the airline industry has become. Whatever the cause, I'm going to try to enjoy it.

Everything you are reading and watching here was handled on my phone:
shooting the video; speeding a shot up; editing and titling;
rendering; compressing; and composing this post. Nothing went out to
a computer.

The video processing and editing was done with two apps by Nexvio,
available in the app store. Many smart phones can shoot video, but
I'm not aware of any that can edit it, aside from the iPhone. These
apps are dead simple to use, and the results are quite lovely.

They're promising the ability to add music and narration in an
update. (The current version only adds whatever sound was recorded at
the time the video was shot -- there's audio on this clip; it's just
that I shot these pretties when it was quiet.)

Is that a production studio on your pocket, or are you just happy to
see me?

Another new painting application

Not much time to write, but I wanted to post this image I made while
waiting for a delayed flight, using a new natural media simulator for
the iPhone.

This one is called Layers, and where it differs from my standard
painting app (Brushes!) is in it's offering of Photoshop-like layers.
You can paint on a single layer, add new transparent layers and paint
in them, kind of like painting on panes of glass stacked one atop the
next.

It has a few quirks and bugs, but it is a remarkably well executed app.

I'll write a proper review soon. In the meantime, check it out!

Pink Saturday, part deux

Do you like movies about gladiators?

I know these guys were handing out something, but can't for the life of me remember what it was...

Largest mirror ball I've ever seen, and I've seen my share. I've also whacked my head on my share, but that wasn't going to happen with this 10' diameter, crane suspended behemoth.

Some twink climbed up on the street light. Cool image for gay pride in the Castro. I played with the image a bit in Photogene.

People who live on Castro Street often hang out their windows, offering to toss plastic party beads in exchange for a "show" from the passers-by. I used to live in the building just past the neon sign on the left; I wasn't in a Castro-facing unit, so I would just go up on the roof for parties like this.

Some of the entertainment. I love how enthralled the audience is.

Every year a group of volunteers goes up on Twin Peaks and builds a huge, illuminated pink triangle above the city. This year there were some fireworks launched around midnight.

(For readers who don't know where the pink triangle comes from, it was used by Nazis to identify gays, much as the yellow star was used to identify Jews. We've embraced the symbol and in the embracing of it, have robbed it of it's former negative power.)

The Pink Party this year was very fun. As a community and personally we've been through a lot since the last pride. We saw our first, state-sanctioned same-sex marriages (including my own), and then we saw the state vote with a slim margin to classify me and my people as second-class citizens -- a vote that was upheld by the California Supreme Court. The "fierce advocate" for the GLBT community who occupies the White House has yet to act on his promises to end the worse than useless "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and the hateful "Defense of Marriage Act." He's done damage to us, too...

Despite these setbacks (and probably in no small part because of them), the community has come together in a celebration filled with joy and love.

I'm a little embarrassed to say that I'm reminded of that old Chumbawumba song, with a minor alteration:

We get knocked down, but we get up again. No, you're never going to keep us down.

More Brushes!

You may recall that I've posted stuff I painted on my iPhone using the
app "Brushes!" before. Brushes! Certainly seems to be catching on. A
cover of the New Yorker magazine was painted with it. A well known
artist included images he painted on the iPhone in a museum show.. A
British newspaper recently published a spread of works by various
artists using Brushes.

All of this inspired me to play some more. This is what I put
together a little last night and a little on the train to work this
morning.

Once More Into the Breach

I'm assembling my field video kit to tape presentation of the Supreme
Court's opinion on Prop 8 -- whether I am still married, whether a
simple majority can vote away the rights of a minority.

As I clamp the camera body to the tripod, I steady myself. The
nutjobs were assembling when I arrived this morning at 7:30, carrying
signs proclaiming their self-righteous, self-defined superiority
because they happen to be straight.

As I test the camera settings, I ready myself as best I can for what
I'm about to see.

Will I be fighting back tears of joy, or tears of despair? I'll know
in an hour and ten minutes.

Heading Home!

Whew! The weekend trip is over. By any measure, the premiere was a smashing success. The second night also sold out, which surprised me. Both nights' audiences were very enthusiastic and excited. It seems to be a big deal to have the world premiere of a movie in Cleveland.

The crowd excitedly awaited curtain. (Chris was afraid nobody in San Francisco would believe that there were crowds. I offer the above photo as proof!) On the second night we recognized a couple who had come the first night. They had no connection to Eggshellsnd (the place or the movie), they just liked the movie so much that they came back for seconds. And the second night they brought their daughter along. She seemed to enjoy the movie, too.

I had some time to see the sights of Cleveland on Saturday with my in-laws who drove over from Pittsburgh for the day. I know I'm tall, but I never realized just how freakishly tall I am. You know, other than when I'm trying to stuff myself into a coach-class seat on a five-hour flight....

So, now I'm on my way home. Tired. Glad I went. But glad to be out of that hotel. Oh, right. The hotel. It was, er, a hotel. Mostly....

Welcome to Eggshelland

Yep, it's real. I'm here in Cleveland (yes, Cleveland) and I've just gotten back from visiting Eggshelland, the subject of Eggshelland, the documentary I wrote and performed the musical score for. Here you see me and Chris Noice, the director of the movie, in front of this year's display. It's far more spectacular than I expected.

I also got to meet Ron and Betty Manolio, though I didn't get any photos of them on my camera. The awesome thing about them is that they were exactly as I expected them to be from having watched the movie. So, Chris did a great job capturing them and their energy and their love for one another.

Here's Julie Matthews, the producer of the movie, along with Chris, flanking the poster for the movie that Ron and Betty put up alongside the Eggshelland display. Chris and Julie have been working on this movie off and on for five years.

The work is paying off, and we're now about an hour and a half away from the world premiere of Eggshelland. Everyone is excited and nervous, though I've been through this world premiere business before. Still, it's fun.

Look for another posting later tonight or tomorrow with details about the premiere and how it all came together. We're expecting a pretty good crowd, judging by ticket sales, so I'm hoping it'll be a great experience for Chris, Julie, the Manolio family and everyone else who comes.

Long Day

I started today with a trip to Sacramento for work. After a brief scare (one of the folks I was to tape was in an unscheduled meeting with someone very high up in the organization -- someone who is famous for not being able to keep scheduled meetings on schedule, let alone unscheduled ones), I managed to finish everything and hit the road back to San Francisco. Directly from the office, I hit BART, and got to the airport on time for my flight to Cleveland (via LA). The flight to LA was quite nice; I was able to upgrade to "economy plus" for 14 bucks.

Now I'm at LAX, awaiting the sardine-can leg of the trip. They're overbooked, looking for volunteers to give up a seat. I'm tempted, except that Chris has already promised to pick me up at the Cleveland airport, and he's probably asleep....

Alas. It's going to be a long, cramped flight....

But, WORLD PREMIERE OF EGGSHELLAND.

I've recently changed health insurance providers, primarily because I didn't like my previous provider, but also because we were putting Paul on my plan, and he really does like his doctor, who wasn't on my original plan. As a result, I've been getting to know my new doc, and that means new tests.

I went in for a blood draw this morning before work. The nurse (are they nurses or technicians who do the draws?) was a very nice Brazilian who took about one gallon out of me. (I exaggerate -- but only slightly -- for what I hope is comic effect.). I haven't had a draw like this in years, and maybe it's because I'm getting older, but I don't remember being this light headed afterwards....

So, now I'm in the office awaiting the arrival of tape for me to edit a package about the State of the Judiciary Address, and I'm oddly mesmerized by the glowey USB powered plasma ball on my desk.

I'm cross-posting this with my other blog, the one I share with Paul documenting the behind-the-scenes processes involved with making our movies. Currently we're working on our second Inspector Hieronymus short, so most of our postings over there are about that project. If you're subscribed to my blog here, please add HomoMech to your subscriptions, too. It'll keep you up to date on the movie side of what's going on with me....

Here's the post from HomoMech:

Paul's script called for Inspector Hieronymus to use his "fabulous steampunk Polaroid" in our second short film chronicling the adventures of the intrepid occult detective. The camera needed to look like something that the Inspector would use to photograph supernatural activity, and in Paul's mind, I guess, that's "steampunk." The first Hieronymus short featured his "fabulous steampunk flashlight," and given it's brass fittings and such, I'd say it was, indeed, steampunk. (You can see the flashlight -- and the entire short -- here.) I'm pretty familiar with the historic line of Polaroid cameras, from the old Land to the Spectra and the "Go," but none of them were what I'd call "steampunk."

So, one Saturday a few weeks ago, I got together with JT Tepnapa of Star Trek Phase II, In the Closet (In the Closet isn't safe for work!) and Judas' Kiss for a walk through the Mission District of San Francisco to hit some thrift stores, looking for material to work with. We found a bunch of old cameras for cheap, and one awesome object that's a relic from the physical film days of home-movies (which I'm hanging on to for future projects!). Thrift-shopping for props is a great way to spend an afternoon hanging out with a friend.

Once home, I took apart one of the cameras, added some wood inlays, some brass brads, and some leather, but I still wasn't feeling it. It needed some brass fittings. So, I went to our local hardware store and spent more on brass lamp parts than I did on the rest of the camera and drilled, screwed and glued them on. The end result is the contraption you see the Inspector holding in the photo above. All in all I think it worked.

If we keep making these movies, we're going to build quite a collection of steampunk or para-Victorian items.

And that couldn't make me happier.

The End of an Era

Today marked the last broadcast of California Courts News, or CCN.
CCN is (was) the monthly news program I've been producing for the
Judicial Branch for the last five and a half years. The Office of
Communications, which is responsible for the program's content, has
decided to retool the show for web-only distribution. I'll continue
to produce the web version, and it will be cool, but it won't be the
same....

Today, a bunch of my co-workers came down to the studio while the show
was going out over the satellite with donuts and sparkling cider to
celebrate the show and send it off in style. It was a total surprise,
and a wonderful thing for them to have done.

Beta Brushes

I've written about the iPhone application "Brushes" before -- it's a natural media simulator on the iPhone which allows me to "paint" pictures with nothing but my finger and my phone. I love it, because I enjoy painting, but often inspiration strikes me when I'm not anywhere near real paint and brushes, or even my laptop. But I always have my phone with me.

So, I was really pleased when Steve, the guy who wrote Brushes, contacted me and asked if I'd be interested in beta testing a new version of the software. I enthusiastically agreed, and have been playing with a couple pre-release versions for a month or so. Up until the most recent version, the interface has been virtually identical, and the feeling of painting is very much the same. (The most recent version added two enhancements I'm really happy to see -- the ability to zoom out from the canvas, allowing for painting edge to edge, and the ability to zoom in as far as 800%, which allows me to paint tiny little details.)

Under the hood, though, Brushes has undergone some significant changes. The software remembers every stroke you make (which is very handy if you need to undo a lot of mistakes). It also allows you to export the image file to your computer, where the companion "Brushes Viewer" allows you to see the image you created, and to export a movie of yourself painting the image -- playing every stroke in order as you painted them -- or exporting a larger image than the tiny little 320x480 pixel image that the iPhone screen supports. Brushes Viewer allows you to export images up to 6 times that resolution -- up to 1920x2880 -- which is amply large to print even up to 8x10 or larger.

The downside to this is that I see exactly how primitive my pianting is! It's encouraging me to spend more energy increasing the detail I paint with. To the right is the same painting in the upper corner, at the 6x resolution. (You may have to click on it to get the large version.) You can really see the brush strokes and the smudgy stars and stuff.

(In my defense, I scribbled this painting out in about 24 minutes just to send Steve something and to let him know my impressions of this newest Beta version.)

I believe that this version of the software will be what Steve submits to Apple for the next upgrade to Brushes. It's an awesome update, and adds some real-world usefulness to this really powerful application. If you're interested in painting with your iPhone or iPod touch, Brushes is the app!

Luna and Venus over the Emerald City

A few days ago as I left work, I passed City Hall which was bathed in
green light. Looking up, I saw the moon and Venus above the classic
Beaux Arts dome. Snap with the phone.

Diana, the goddess of the moon, was a goddess of wisdom, and Venus, of
course, was the goddess of love. I can't think of two more suitable
figures to hold court over San Francisco, particularly as the Supreme
Court heats the Prop 8 cases in a month.

May the wisdom of Diana and the love of Venus guide the Justices.

Hey, everyone! Just thought I'd share an early sketch/painting/photo-
manipulation I did as a concept for the art on an "Inspector
Hieronymus" period style poster.

What do you think? I think it captures the feel of a 1940's noir
poster while still conveying the sexiness that Don oozes as the
Inspector. I also like the "what's that, Nancy Drew?" look on his
face....

As we work on more stories featuring our darkly heroic Inspector, I'm
thinking we'll want one poster image to rule them all! Is this one
close? Please make suggestions or just give up your opinion in the
comments!

I'm at MacWorld, perusing the Expo, and have just come across a pretty
awful advertising gimmick. The photo is of the DeLorean from Back to
the Future. THE DeLorean.

Why is it on display at MacWorld? Because the company that brought it
here replaces the glossy screen on your MacBook with a matte one and
promises to get it BACK IN TIME for you to get whatever work done you
need to get done.

Clever, no?

New painting App

So, I still love Brushes, the natural media emulator for my iPhone,
but it has a few limitations. Foremost among them is the tiny size of
the images I can create with it. They look great on the phone itself,
and even in a small window on a computer, but they're way too small to
be printed.

So, I downloaded another painting app. It's called "Colors!" and it's
been around for the Nintendo DS for a few years, I believe. They
ported it to the iPhone and made some enhancements to it. It's not
quite as much a "natural media simulator" as Brushes, but it has one
advantage in that it can output a much larger, print-worthy file.

Now if only I could get good enough with Colors! To make a print-
worthy image! The image above was my first attempt.

Give me time; I'll get better...

World AIDS Day

Today, December First, is World AIDS Day. Begun 20 years ago, World AIDS Day is about raising awareness (and money, too), and fighting prejudice.

If you can, do something supportive for the community. You can read about it any number of places. Go to Google and they have a link on their front page. Go to www.sfaf.org for more info. Get educated. Educate others.

Remember that AIDS has not gone away.

Extra-Solar Planets

A couple weeks ago astronomers announced that they had, for the first time in human history, directly observed planets outside our little corner of the Universe, the Solar System. This announcement inspired me to smear some iPhone pixels around and create this image.

All previously known extra-solar planets have been deduced by gravitational fluctuations or by minute diminituions of the parent star, but "Fomalhaut B" was spotted in images taken by our old friend, Hubble. It's somewhere between half and twice the size of Jupiter, and orbits nearly three times farther from Fomalhaut than Neptune orbits Sol. Photographing it was like photographing a single grain of sand on Baker Beach in San Francisco while standing on the moon.

We live science fiction every day.

Come Together

There was a nation-wide protest against Prop 8 Saturday It impressed me that people came together in cities all across America to protest the initiative that takes away the right of same-sex couples to marry. I went to San Francisco's rally.

Signs were waved, speeches were spoken, chants were chanted and an unauthorized march wound it's way throughout the city. I didn't participate in the march, having gotten the spontaneous marching thing last week, but I wish I had. The march last week was from City Hall to the Castro - friendly territory:

The march Saturday hit the less gay areas of the City. Reports from folks who did go marching say it went along Market toward the Castro, but was unexplainedly turned around before getting there. A smaller group had left the rally earlier, and it seems that the SFPD tried to marshal the two groups into one. I'm told the two groups wound up coming together in Union Square, from which they marched through Chinatown, to Fisherman's Wharf (those tourists will have some awesome San Francisco photo-memories!), along the piers, to the Embarcadero, and back along Market. Everyone I've talked to left the march then, around 7 hours after the rally began, but I've read reports saying it went on for quite a while longer.

Aside from one accidental honking on the head of a bystander with a sign, I've heard of no scuffles or issues related to the march. It was a peaceful expression of solidarity and outrage, and definitely shows that this fight is far from over.

I did this iPhone painting today while footage was digitizing. It's
not an actual self portrait, but it captures how I felty at about 4:30
this morning when the Prop 8 numbers just weren't changing.

Ah, the therapeutic nature of art. To focus on creating an image helps
me calm myself....

Let's Talk About Education

So, this map shows the counties in California that went "no" on 8 in robin's-egg blue, and "yes" on 8 in baby-diarrhea brown. (No editorial comment intended by the selection of color, let me assure you.)

The biggest surprise here for me was that LA fell for the hate-filled lies of the yes on 8 campaign. It was close in LA, like most counties that went "yes." Well, most counties except Riverside, San Bernardino, and Kern. They're the "Inland Empire" counties west and north of LA, and they account for more than the 400,000 votes that make up the difference between "no" and "yes."

Let's overlay a filter on the map:

This filter darkens any county whose population has less than 15% with Bachelor's Degrees. The darkened counties above are 85% or greater non-college educated. If we only counted the votes of the counties with 15% or more College Graduates, Prop 8 would have burned. By a significant margin.

Now, as Humboldt, Mendocino, and Monterey prove, a less than 15% college degree rate does not mean you have to be a right-wing, homophobe-filled region, much as San Diego, Orange, and Sacto prove that education does not necessarily lead to an idyllic paradise of loving diversity.

What these data do suggest to me is that education leads to open minds. I think that's really what education is supposed to be about. So, if we want to help bring the world forward to a more accepting, embracing place, we should support higher education.

The data represented here came from the Los Angeles Times and the US Census Bureau.

I've voted before work on election day in most of the elections that have occurred in San Francisco since I moved here in 2001. This is the first time there's been a line of more than three people when I arrived at the polling place, 10 minutes before they open.

And this is less than half of the people in line. The queue goes up Castro Street and is starting to turn the corner onto State Street.

Yay for civic responsibility!

Please Vote No on Prop 8

Hi, everyone --

One final posting before Election Day. This video is one of the last ads produced by the No on Prop 8 committee, and it does a great job of explaining why it's so important to defeat this proposition.

I spent many hours this weekend (some during torrential downpours) handing out information, answering questions and waving signs to help get the message out, along with dozens of other volunteers at my location, plus who knows how many other volunteers throughout the state. But it's not enough if we don't actually get out and vote.

On the off chance that you haven't heard, Proposition 8 seeks to eliminate rights that currently exist in California. It is written such that if it passes, discrimination will be enshrined in the most significant governing document in California. If it passes, I'm not sure what will become of my marriage; the State Attorney General has issued an opinion that he thinks marriages performed will still be valid, but until the inevitable lawsuits wend their way through the courts, nobody will know for sure.

I know that many of you don't live in California, and you can't vote here. But if you know anyone who does live here, please remind them to vote tomorrow, and to vote "No" on Proposition 8.

For those of you who do live in California, if you value equality for everyone, if you don't want to see discrimination become law of the land, please vote "NO" on Proposition 8.

A Saner Shade of Crazy

You may remember that Halloween in the Castro had become too crazy to be fun, and in fact had become dangerous, what with that shooting and subsequent stampede two years ago. So, last year, city officials, lead by our district's Supervisor, Bevan Dufty, shut the Castro down for Halloween. It was a controversial approach, to be sure, but tonight has shown that it was a wise approach.

It was hard to get good photos since I'd only brought my iPhone, and it doesn't have a flash. I hope these pictures give a sense of the evening.

Yes, the Castro was crowded, but not nearly so crowded as it has been in years past. In fact, there were baricades in the hood, but they were set up to keep people on the sidewalk, not to keep traffic off the streets. While there were places of pedestrian congestion, it wasn't bad. Most interesting to me is the fact that people who were milling around really seemed to be there to have a good time. So, even though there was some crowding, particularly in front of bars, people maintained a good attitude.

Costumes were clever, and there were a number of Sarah Palins, as one might expect at a celebration of all things horrifying. There was a group of Mormon Missionaries, who were favorite picture subjects of many of the revelers. I was asked by a number of people to pose with the missionaries, no doubt because I was dressed as what could probably best be described as Satan's pimp.

Politically-themed costumes were de rigeur, with the afire mentioned Palinplex, marriage sets and this elaborate vehicular "tribute" to Senator McCain and his Kibrickian sensibilities:

And, of course, what would a street party in the Castro be without some man-flesh?

The guy on the right's t-shirt says it all.

Even though I'm a nervous wreck about whether Prop 8 will pass or fail, my town has brought back something I fell in love with when I first moved here. Let's hope it can stay small, local, and fun for years to come.

While watching an old episode of Murder She Wrote, I played with
Brushes some more.

It really does please me just how much like wet acrylics this
application feels. I know that I'm just rubbing my finger on the glass
surface of the phone, but I can almost feel the liquid smear on the
illustration board.

Brushes or ArtRage (which I talked about in a post about a year ago)
or any of the "natural media" simulation programs can really help
someone cultivate their artistic skillset. If you've never painted,
picking one of these up (ArtRage starter edition is free for both mac
and PC at http:\\www.ambientdesign.com, and brushes for the iPhone is
on sale at the app store for a while for 99 cents I think) would be a
great way to try it out without having to invest in paint, canvas,
cleaners, etc. Plus, there's no mess to clean up, and no brightly
colored flecks on your fingers that no matter how hard you scrub just
won't go away!

Give it a try. And if you do, let me know! I'd love to see what you do.

I had really forgotten how fun it can be to just quickly throw
together some quick illustrations.

I made these all on my phone using the apps "Sketches" and "Brushes."
Each took about 15 or 20 minutes, and it took about 5 to put them
together using the "Collage" app. I did the text using "Photogene."

I had a little more time to kill today while monitoring something that took only a tiny portion of my brain, so I was able to pull a complete paint set, canvas and easel out of my pants. Really, that's what it feels like. Except no mess or turpentine. And a really small canvas, but sometimes painting small can be fun.

I thought I'd see if I could go back to my space-art roots on the
little computer in my pocket, and do a quick Star Trek inspired
painting with the tools on my phone. Many years ago, during what my
dad called my "bohemian phase," I made my living doing acrylic and
airbrush paintings of similar Sci-Fi and fantasy images. It was a fun
time in my life, and painting this took me back -- if only for the 25
minutes it took to create.

For the iPhone/iPod touch-enabled out there, here's what I used:

Brushes (http://brushesapp.com/)
I painted the explosion, phaser, and starship freehand in this
excellent hand-held natural media emulator.

Sketches (http://www.sketchesapp.com/)
The starfield had to be a little more crisp than I could achieve in
Brushes, so I saved the painting to the phone's photo library and
opened it in Sketches to add the various stars.

I saved that to the photo app and opened it in Brushes again, because
I wanted to add some nebulosity to the image. If I'd thought of it, I
could have done this during the first generation in Brushes, and saved
some quality. Ah, well, I know better for next time...

Comic Touch (http://plasq.com/comictouch)
Saved that output and opened it in Comic Touch (still one of my
favorite apps on the phone) to add the caption and word balloon.

Photogene (http://web.me.com/omer.shoor/photogene/main.html)
Finally, after saving the output from Comic Touch, I took the file
into Photogene, a very useful app that handles a number of things
(including word balloons, though I like the font and look of the
balloons from Comic Touch more). Using Photogene, I cropped the image
and added the frame.

Literally, this all took me 25 minutes, about as long as it took to
tap out this blog post on the phone. (All of this was done while
babysitting a print-to-tape operation at work.)

Pretty amazing for a phone!

New Favorite iPhone App

So, this was made with "Flipbook," an app I picked up on the iTunes App store a week or so ago. While this is a really simple animation, the program shows a lot of creative potential. There's been some great stuff put up on the flipbook site, (www.flipbook.tv). Of course, there's also an enormous amount of drivel up there, but there are some gems.

With this program (or the other two that are similar), the various painting and photo manipulation programs, plus music production apps (I have a couple of those, but haven't really dug into them), I'm sure it's only a matter of time until someone produces an entire movie on an iPhone.

(Flipbook has now replaced Comic Touch as my Favorite way to kill time, though I still do play with Comic Touch a lot. Give me a while and I'll combine the two into something fun....)

ZOMG!! It's REAL!

A very quick trip to City Hall at lunch netted me this. It's the
certified copy of vital records, proving that Paul and I are married!
For REAL!

Now, if the Constitution means anything these days (and with the Bush
administration still in power, I'm not sure it does, but I digress),
this record SHOULD be recognized and accepted by all states in the
Union. See, there's that "full faith and credit" clause on the
Constitution, which states:

"Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public
Acts, Records, and Judicial Proceedings of every other State."

Right there in the US Constitution. And right here in my hand is a
public record of a public act.

Only an idiot would try to wrangle out of requiring this public record
to be recognized by every State.

But, then, there are a lot of idiots out there.

Nonetheless, it's amazing to me how happy getting this piece of paper
has made me!

Those of you reading in California, don't forget to vote in November
to take down Prop 8 that would, if passed, rescind the legal right of
two individuals to marry, if they happen to be of the same gender. It
must fail!

And those of you reading in other states, if you are facing a similar
proposition or amendment, vote against it. They all must fail!

Even if you don't vote typically, register and vote. It's important.

iPhone Software Review

So, the Apple Application Store has been out for a week and a half,
and while I certainly haven't tried everything that's out there, I
thought I'd take a minute or two to tap a review out on some of my
favorites.

(This is being written ON an iPhone, by the way, and I'll do my best
to catch any "corrections" that may creep in, but some may slip
through.)

Anyway, as my husband will confirm, I've kind of become addicted to
checking the App store daily for new fun bits. (Bad Apple for posting
nothing new last night!). I've picked up a bunch of the free apps
(cheap bastard that I am), and a few paid ones, and have had some time
to form opinions about most of them. Here are some of those opinions,
in no particular order:

BEST APP TO MAKE MY GEEKY COWORKERS WANT TO SWITCH TO IPHONE: iSaber.
This app puts a tiny light saber on your screen, which is cool enough,
but what makes it worthy of jealousy is the fact that it makes the
light saber sounds when you swing the phone around. Perfect for
dorky, imaginary duels around the house or office.

BEST APP TO KILL A FEW MINUTES WITH: CubeRunner.
A sweet flying or driving Game that uses the accelerometer to steer.
You tip the phone left and right to steer, and it feels right. The
graphics are super simple, but they work. Not something I'll spend
hours playing, but a fun little diversion.

BEST APP TO KILL A LOT OF TIME: tie between Super Monkey Ball and
Comic Touch.
Super Monkey Ball. You control a little monkey in a hampster ball,
rolling around on platforms that most certainly don't meet office
safety standards. Awesome graphics, cool music, slightly frustrating
controls (same as the Wii version), and a crazy concept. How can you
go wrong?
Comic Touch. I have way too much fun with this app. It's from the
same folks who make Comic Life (www.plasq.com), and is a near-perfect
down-scale of the desktop version. Start with a photo, add word
balloons, captions, etc, and do some simple effects, too. It's made
me look at my photo library with new eyes, thinking about what I can
do with the pictures. I'll work on a single panel comic for a long
time, having a creative ball all the while.

MOST USEFUL APP FOR AFTER-HOURS WHILE ON THE ROAD FOR WORK: Urban Spoon.
Give the phone a shake and it randomly selects, rates, and maps a
restaurant nearby. How cool is that?!?

MARRIED!

So, I keep learning that there are people who do read this blog. What
does that have to do with getting married? Well, as it turns out, my
now LEGALLY RECOGNIZED brother-in-law was concerned because neither
Paul nor I had posted at our blogs recently. And that was because we
were busy getting married.

Yes, it became legal for us to get married in mid-June. We went to
city hall to get the license on June 26, thinking that we would get
married sometime within 90 days.

Next thing you know, we're in tuxes, getting married at the little
chapel that opened in the Castro shortly before the ruling went into
effect. They did a fabulous job at the chapel.

Now that the deed is done, I'll be posting more often. I'll also post
some more pictures when I get the chance.

Meanwhile, this is a pic from the wedding that I've comicified using
the new iPhone application, Comic Touch. Same old iPhone, but with
the new software, it feels like a brand new device.

The Pride festival was this weekend in San Francisco. No numbers have
surfaced as to how many out-of-staters got same-sex hitched while
visiting for Pride, but speculation places the number pretty high. I
overheard conversations about a few non-California couples tying the
knot.

This photo is all that's left of a once proud feather boa. It was
pathetically blowing across the stone sidewalk of the Civic center as
I made my way to work today.

No Stay!

California Supreme Court Denies Rehearing and Stay in Marriage Cases.
Decision to become final on June 16 at 5:00 p.m.

San Francisco—The California Supreme Court today filed an order in the Marriage Cases (S147999; decision filed May 15, 2008), denying requests to stay its decision until after the November 2008 election and denying petitions for rehearing.

The rehearing petitions were denied by a 4-3 vote. Chief Justice Ronald George, and Justices Joyce Kennard, Kathryn Werdegar, and Carlos Moreno voted to deny rehearing. Justices Marvin Baxter, Ming Chin, and Carol Corrigan would have granted rehearing.

The order further specified that the decision of the court filed on May 15, 2008, will become final on June 16, 2008, at 5 p.m.

It's June, which is the month the gay community celebrates Pride.
Since I moved here in 2001, I've always been impressed by how much the
entire City goes out for Pride. Statistics indicate that as many as
35% of San Francisco identifies as gay, lesbian, bi, or trans, so it's
not a huge surprise, I suppose.

Here is the small breeze that announces the approach of the oncoming
storm. Advertisements for the celebration have gone up in MUNI
stations throughout the City. Soon Market street will be festooned
with rainbow flags from the bay to the Castro and queer tourists will
crowd trains, busses, bars and the sidewalks in this yearly festival
of diversity and solidarity.

With the recent California Supreme court decision making the way for
same-sex marriage starting June 17, this year we all have much of
which to be proud. I expect many tourists to come here this year.
Many more than usual. And they should! Couples should come to get
married. Even if it's not recognized in their home states, it has so
much meaning. (If it didn't have meaning, the closed-minded wouldn't
be fighting so hard to deny people they think of as "lesser" that
right. But I digress.)

So, this is a month in which we all should celebrate.

Celebrate our victories.

Celebrate our love.

Celebrate who we are.

"Older Americans" Month

Not Seniors, or Elders, but "Older Americans."

Two things come to mind, here. One: it's language like this that leads
to outed right-wing politicians to declare themselves "gay Americans;"
and two: that every American in the country except for the very last
one born in May is an American who is older than at least one other
American, so it must be everyone's month.

I hope everyone has enjoyed their special month! Whether you knew it
was your special month or not.

the beatuiful plant-life. Some of it is just lovely, like this
picture, and some of it is agressive, like the tendrils that try to
strangle the unsuspecting visitor to our front door. Those frighten me.

Spontaneous street party getting underway in the Castro. This is
"spontaneous" here: a big-ass DJ stage and speakers. As I was walking
to meet friends for drinks, I passed the usual retinue of drag queens,
Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, shirtless studs, hot dykes, and
people in full costume. What was unusual was the phalanx of TV crews.
I passed at least seven, as well as any number of indie documentary
crews.

The revolution is being televised!

I just struck some stills from the video I took this morning and thought I'd post a few.

This is the first person to receive the ruling at 10:00 AM. He's also the first person to squeal with delight when reading the decision. I got his name on tape, but don't have it available right now. If I can retreive the name I'll edit this post.

Here he is squealing. To be fair, there were probably 25 people squealing at this moment.

I wasn't squealing, but I really was getting some tears in my eyes, which made it hard to focus the camera.

Here are two parties involved in the case hugging after everyone realized that it was real.

Some folks unfurled the rainbow flag in the anteroom of the Clerk's office after the announcement.

"It's about human dignity. It's about civil rights. It's about time."

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom said the title of this post regarding today's decision by the California Supreme Court which says that limiting marriage to mixed-gender couples "improperly infringes a same-sex couple's constitutional righs to marry and to the equal protection of the laws as guaranteed by the California Constitution."

I took this photo this morning while I was taping for work.

It was one of the most wonderful, happy, emotional moments of my life. I'm glad to have been there for history.

There was a line outside the Clerk of the Supreme Court's office by about 9:30. People were patiently awaiting the handing out of copies of the decision to find out what the outcome of four years of litigation would be.

The first man in line picked up his copy of the decision and started reading. Fritz, the Clerk of the Supreme Court, said, "please try to walk while reading!" A chuckle arose from the crowd as the man started walking out of the office, making room for the next people in line.

About fifteen seconds later, when the man had made it through the first paragraphs and to the paragraph that clearly stated that the Court was finding discrimination to be contrary to the State Constitution, he shouted "YES!" A cheer rose up from other people in line, and soon it was mayhem, as press were trying to get the man's reaction, and others were reading the ruling and reaching the same point.

Outside the State building, reporters swarmed gay and lesbian couples who were choking back tears and wiping sweat from their brows in the unusually hot San Francisco sun. I was taping the event as part of my job, but this was so much more than just taping for work. Repeatedly, tears welled up in my eyes as the realization of what had just happened would strike me. I've rarely had difficulty keeping objectivity when taping professionally, but this was just too much. My hands were shaking as I tried to send a short text to my husband: "We won!"

Today is a day of pure happiness.

It's about human dignity.

It's about civil rights.

It's about time!

Getting Some Notice

As many readers (if, indeed, I have "many" readers) may know, I've composed the theme for a Star Trek fan fiction series called Odyssey. I also composed the score for the pilot episode, and that score is the subject of a review published on "TrekWeb," a website devoted to all manner of Star Trek stuff.

I knew nothing about the review. I haven't been reading the Odyssey forums (fora?) and really have been out of touch on that subject, but I subscribe to the RSS feed from doorQ -- a gay sci-fi portal and social networking site -- and one of the folks there pointed out that the review was up on TrekWeb.

As they say, "any publicity is good publicity," but this review was actually really nice and quite positive! The reviewer, Earl Green, compared my work on a technical level as comparable to Dennis McCarthy -- the composer of much of the incidental music from Star Trek: the Next Generation, as well as the emmy award winning composer of the theme for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and the composer on the Star Trek: Generations movie. He had some very nice things to say about the theme and leitmotiv structure of the score, as well. I was really pleased about it!

I don't drive much, any more, now that I live in a city with proper
public transportation (disfunctional as it may be), so I haven't
really been paying much attention to things like gas prices lately.
The other day I drove out of town for work, and had to fill up the
company car. ZOMG!

All I can say is that I'm REALLY glad that it wasn't coming out of my
pocket!

If I still lived in car culture, this would be killing me. How are
those of you who do still live in car culture managing to handle this?

By the way, this was the CHEAP grade of gas!

Trip to the seventies.

Listening to Dream Weaver on the iPod, there's a moment of time travel
to my life. Those who know San Francisco history may remember the
famously infamous Toad Hall.

It lives again, thanks to the movie about Harvey Milk that's shooting
in the hood.

Ah, how I miss the 70's.
